General Secretary of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana, (MOWAG), Richard Kofi Jordan says the association will not back down on its demands.

Speaking on GBC’s Programme, ‘Uniiq Breakfast Drive’, he said the strike will continue until government heeds to their demands.

He said members of the Association have been taken for granted for far too long.

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana, MOWAG, began an indefinite strike Tuesday.

This was after the Ministry of Health failed to address concerns raised by MOWAG on salaries and working conditions.

Meanwhile, mortuary services at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi in the Western Region are on-going inspite of a nation-wide strike by mortuary workers. A visit to the facility Thursday morning saw workers at post going about their normal duties, with some people who have bodies of their relatives in the mortuary waiting to see if there will be any results, following reports that mortuary workers will not attend to bodies under their care.

Head of Administration at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Abraham Asare-Bediako mentioned that although the mortuary workers are on strike, measures have been put in place to ensure that activities there are not affected.

He said no dead body has been left in the wards or at inappropriate places as being speculated.

Mr. Asare-Bediako also assured the public especially people who have bodies of relatives at the mortuary not to panic as the issue is being handled by the appropriate quarters.

Some members of the public who spoke to Radio Ghana appealed to government to as a matter of urgency address the concerns of the mortuary workers. Others also maintained that, although very expensive, they prefer the services of private mortuaries where there are ultra-modern storage facilities with highly motivated workers.
