Mozambique election observer killed by ‘elite police’

There is growing anger in Mozambique over the death of a prominent election observer after it emerged that the Police were involved.

Anastacio Matavele was shot dead in the southern Gaza Province on Monday by five men armed with assault rifles.

When their get-away car was involved in a fatal crash, the Police revealed that four of them belonged to an elite Police Unit.

The latest killing comes in the run-up to next week’s elections.

President Filipe Nyusi is vying for a second term against the main opposition Renamo’s Ossufo Momade and two other candidates in the elections on Tuesday.
