Members of Parliament are pushing for a special Parliamentary committee with the responsibility of monitoring Ghana’s progress on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu who made the proposal in a statement on the floor, said the SDGs are people centred and as representatives of the people, MPs cannot stand on the fence but play a lead role in ensuring that government delivers on the SDGs for the benefit of the citizens.

All others who contributed to the statement supported the call for the special committee.

The Speaker has directed the formation of a seven member SDG monitoring and oversight committee.

Meanwhile, the Minority has raised concerns about the failure of the Finance ministry to furnish the House with the Budget estimates for the 2020 Fiscal year when he presented the Budget.

The MPs have over the last six days debated the government’s financial policy, culminating in its approval Tuesday after concluding remarks from the leadership of both sides.

At Wednesday’s sitting, MP for Asawase and Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak said having debated and approved the financial policy, the next thing to do is for MPs to be provided with the budget estimates for the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies for thorough scrutiny and approval as the case may be.

He was disappointed that, a day after conclusion of the debate on the policy, not a single estimate was before the House. His position was supported by MP for Wa West, Joseph Yileh Chireh.

Majority Chief Whip, Mathew Nyindam disputes claims that no estimate is in the House.

Mr. Mubarak challenged the majority Chief Whip to provide the estimates.

Chairman of the Finance Committee, Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah said the Finance Ministry has given indications that the estimates will be brought by Friday and he entreated the committees to meet during the weekend to consider the estimates.

Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutsey Avedzi told the House the proposal from the Finance committee chairman is not feasible and flies in the face of the agreed roadmap.

The Speaker, Prof. Mike Oquaye ruled that the leadership of the majority ensures that the estimates are brought to the House as early as practicable. He said, at the moment it cannot be said that any estimate is in the House.
