N/R: Worshippers arrested for defying ban on public gatherings

The Northern Regional Security Council has warned residents against flouting the presidential directive on religious and social gathering.

The council says it will not spare any group or individual caught performing congregational worship, funerals, weddings or outdoorings.

The Chairman of the Council, Salifu Saed, gave the warning during a media briefing after the taskforce arrested worshippers in some mosques in a suburb of Tamale on the first day of the compliance exercise.

The taskforce made up of the police, military and other sister security agencies, went round the Sagnerigu municipality and the Tamale metropolis to assess the level compliance to COVID-19 protocols.

The taskforce led by Salifu Saed, locked up chops, restaurants and chop bars that failed to put in place the necessary precautionary measures arrest of worsuch as hand washing equipment.

Some commercial vehicles and tricycle operators we’re cautioned against overloading as part of the operation.

Mr. Salifu Saed expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance generally and indicated that the taskforce will continue to work until the ban is lifted.

The Northern region is on high alert, following an outbreak of COVID-19 in some parts of the country.
