The National Blood Service (NBS) is appealing for more donors to agument its stock in order to save lives.

Speaking at the beginning of an annual Melcom Care sponsored nationwide blood donation at about 22 centres across all the regions on Thursday, December 5, 2019, the Senior Blood Donor Recruitment Officer with the National Blood Service, Sophia Mellis Blankson, called for more donors to come on board.

According to her, “we’re donating for ourselves and the nation because, NBS is only collecting, screening and storing for the public”.

Madam Sophia said, it is important that, people donate freely for storage because a healthy person could suffer an anemia or even lose blood through an accident.

It’s against this background that, Melcom Group of Companies noted that,

“it’s that time of the year when there’s pressure on our health delivery system due to accidents and other health conditions which require urgent blood transfusion”.

In his welcome address, The Director of Communications at Melcom Group, Godwin Avenorgbo said blood transfusion saves lives but the lack of adequate stocks has always been a challenge to the National Blood Service hence their decision to support it.

He said Melcom, together with NBS, in 2013 got 434 pints of blood, which moved to 639 pints in 2014.

The years 2015 and 2016 recorded a tremendous increment of 824 and 1542 pints respectfully, with an expectation to do it bigger 2019.

Mr. Avenorgbo used the occasion to salute all voluntary donors, hospitals assisting in the bleeding exercise and The National Blood Service for their co-operation.
