The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that government appointees are not barred from contesting parliamentary primaries under the party’s constitution.
The clarification was given by the Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the party, Madhi Jibril, during the vetting of five aspirants seeking to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat.
Mr. Jibril stated that the party’s constitution does not require appointees to resign from their positions before participating in internal elections.
His comments come amid discussions surrounding the candidature of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who is among the aspirants vetted for the constituency.
According to the party, eligibility to contest primaries is guided strictly by constitutional provisions and laid-down procedures, not by current appointments.
The NDC says the clarification is intended to prevent misinformation and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the primaries.
