The Centre for Social Democracy in partnership with the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, FES has officially outdoored the first ever pre-election debate for aspirants in the NDC’s  upcoming National Executive and Flagbearership elections.

Dubbed “NDC Debates 2018,” the objective is to create a level playing field for the candidates.

The debate is a three, (3)-day event which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 for aspirants vying for the positions of National Women’s Organiser and National Youth Organiser respectively.

Debates for National Zongo Caucus and National Organiser aspirants will take place on November 1, 2018.

Those of National Communication Officer, General Secretary and National Chairman will happen on November 2, 2018. All activities will take place at the Faculty of Law Auditorium of the University of Ghana between 13hours and 21hours each day.

Speaking to the media in Accra, the Acting Director of Elections of the NDC, Bede Zedeng noted that the debates will offer party members the opportunity to make informed decisions about the choice of candidate as well demand accountability from them.

He said it provides the candidates a cost effective way of marketing themselves and their vision for the party.

He however, intimated that only aspirants vying for substantive positions will take part in the debates with the exception of the National Treasurer who will be appointed henceforth.

The Programs Coordinator at Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Michael Abbey, emphasised, that the foundation is collaborating with the NDC to promote social democracy, since it is an ideology to which the FES strongly ascribe as one of its key tenets.

For his part, a Fellow at the Centre for Social Democracy, Antonio Edem Asinyo said the debate seeks to test candidates’ characteristics like meanness of spirit, ability to listen, willingness to improvise, humour and goodwill.

“Ultimately, the debate seeks to unravel the ability of the candidates to withstand the challenges of the positions they are contesting for,” he reiterated.

A seven member advisory board made up of prominent and well respected persons will oversee the organization of the debate. They include Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Dr. Benjamin Kunbour and Lee Ocran. Others are Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Dr. Michael Kpessah-Whyte, Prosper Hoetu and Michael Abbey.
