The Airborne Force military detachment in the Upper West Region has received items worth 29 thousand Ghana-Cedis to facilitate their stay at their new quarters.

The items included 22 mattresses, 10 bunk beds and a set of dining furniture. The items were purchased by the eleven Municipal and District Assemblies in the region and presented by the Regional Minister Alhaji Alhassan Sulemana.

Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Sulemana

The Airborne Force used to conduct long range patrols to the Upper West Region until 1998 when a detachment was established in the region.

The establishment of the detachment was on the back of the chieftaincy issues that arose during that period.

The detachment was housed at the new Residency [Regional Minister’s residence] until October last year when it was moved to the newly constructed premises for the detachment. The facility was however without its accompanying furniture.

The detachment then wrote to the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCC) for assistance.

According to the Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Sulemana, the RCC then agreed with all the Municipal and District Assemblies to purchase the items for the detachment.

He said although the items might be inadequate, he hoped that it would help the military with their accommodation challenges.

“We are here on behalf of all the Assemblies in the region to present these materials [to the military detachment]. Even though it is very small, we know it will go a long way to alleviate their suffering,” the Minister said.

Lt. Ralph Blackman, Commander, Airborne Force, UWR Detachment

The Commander of the Airborne Force Upper West Regional Detachment, Lt. Ralph Blackman was elated about the presentation.

He assured the minister that the items would be put to good use saying “when this beautiful edifice was handed over to us, we needed to survive and in surviving we needed these materials that the minister, the REGSEC and the municipal [and district] assemblies have presented to us…We would take could care of it, we will use them judiciously and expect that more commitment would be shown. So that when we are in the region, we would continue to work whole heartedly and support the region in all aspects.”

The short ceremony was attended by some staff of the RCC and top security officials in the Upper West Region.
