New waste segregation project to train Tema pupils

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly in collaboration with the Waste Segregation and Composing Movement, an NGO with focus on the environment, has launched a waste segregation project for schools in Tema.

The project, is designed to train school children in recycling processes to equip them to be change agents in their communities.

It is being piloted in 30 selected schools across the Metropolis, as part of the Tema Restoration Agenda.

According to a report by Carlos Atsu Lorlornyo, the launch, which took place at the Twedaase Primary School, brought together school children, teachers, the clergy and the Navy among others.

The Presiding Member of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Joseph Koto, who launched the project on behalf of the MCE stressed, that the Waste Segregation Project is geared towards shaping the minds of the younger generation to appreciate the benefits that come with recycling.

He further called on sister Districts to adopt similar projects in order to bring to reality, the President’s vision of making the Greater Accra Region the cleanest in Ghana.

A Member of the Waste Segregation and Composing Movement, Ereira Malik, in an interview indicated that the project will help reduce the amount of waste that gets to land filled sites.

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Nii Anang-La indicated that, mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that the waste is regularly carted from the schools and markets within. He further called on residents of Tema to support the Project.

The launch saw the handing over of one hundred litter bins of which ninety went to the selected schools whiles ten went to the Metropolitan Assembly.

The litter bins have been colour coded; Brown litter bins are for waste paper; Black for carbon or compost; Green litter bins for bottles, aluminium cans and glass, while the Blue litter bins are for plastics.
