Northern Empowerment Association (NEA) and Ghana Rural Integrated Development (GRID), NGOs based in Ghana and the US have cut sod for the construction of a modern hospital at Carpenter in the Bole Bamboi District of the Northern Region.

The hospital, expected to be built within 24 months, will address a burning need as currently there is no major health facility between Wenchi and Bole, a distance of 167 kilometers.

The facility when completed will serve communities along the boundary between the Bono-Ahafo and the Northern Regions, which currently have to go all the way to Wenchi to access a major health facility.

Accessing healthcare in the areas straddling the Black Volta, that is Bamboi in Northern Region and New Longoro in Bono-Ahafo, along with surrounding communities, is always a challenge.

The nearest major health facility is the Wenchi Methodist Hospital located about 53 kilometers away. For years now the NEA and GRID have been partners working for sustainable development in deprived communities in northern Ghana.

Especially in the Mo areas of Bono -Ahafo and Northern. A firm fixture on their Calendar is bringing in doctors from the US and Canada each year to provide healthcare for the people. Now the Partners are taking it a step further with the roll out of the Leyaata Hospital Project, which will provide the people with a modern hospital, comparable to the best, in the Country.

A ceremony to cut sod for the start of the Project was very well attended by people from the surrounding communities and Stakeholders in health from Bole Bamboi, Kintampo North and Wenchi, including The DCE for Bole Bamboi, Veronica Alele and her Counterpart from Kintampo North, Baffoe Sarkodie.

In a welcome address read on his behalf, the President of the North Mo Traditional Area and Chief of Jama, Nana Pambo lauded the project and promised to get more land released for it if need be.

The Brain behind the project is a Director of the NEA and the Gyaasehene of the Mo Traditional Area, Naa Tibarakala.

Addressing the gathering he said the hospital idea has been nursed since 1972 and so he is elated that it is finally happening.

The Wenchi Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr. Prince Quarshie was also happy saying a hospital at Carpenter is a crucially needed facility.
