Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday strongly condemned the deadly airstrike on a migrant center near the Libyan capital Tripoli, describing it as “inhuman, wicked, and callous on helpless and defenseless people.”

The airstrike hit a center for migrants late Tuesday in a suburb of the Tripoli, leaving at least 40 people dead, according to health authorities in that country.

Buhari, who called for an international investigation, said those behind the death and injury of scores of migrants must be made to face justice.

Some Nigerians were among the 40 people who were killed in that airstrike, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday, without disclosing the exact number.

Buhari noted that the unfortunate attack is a wake-up call to the warring factions in Libya and the international community to quickly restore peace and stability in the beleaguered country.

Libya is a main departure place for undocumented migrants from African and Arab countries trying to reach Europe by sea, but many of them were stopped by the Libyan coast guards funded by the European Union and detained in detention centers in Libya.
