The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) say no decision has been taken to increase public transport fares.
The assurance follows a meeting between the two transport groups and the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, to discuss the review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.
This was inscribed in a press statement released on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, where it was indicated that the transport operators presented a proposal for an upward adjustment in fares during the meeting.
The Ministry of Transport, however, briefed the unions on the current economic situation and measures being implemented to stabilise the Ghana cedi.

The Ministry also highlighted the government’s GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel, which is intended to reduce the impact of fuel costs on transport operators and passengers.
According to the unions, both sides recognised the importance of the fuel intervention but agreed that further discussions were needed to determine its full effect on transport operating costs.
They said the proposed fare increase also requires further consideration before any decision can be reached.
A joint team made up of representatives from the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has therefore been formed to review the various cost factors involved in public transport operations.
The unions say the outcome of the review will determine the next steps and will be communicated to the public.
In the meantime, the GPRTU and GRTCC have stressed that existing approved transport fares remain in force across the country.
They have therefore directed drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the current approved fares until further notice.
The two groups have also appealed to drivers, transport operators and passengers to remain calm, orderly and cooperative while the review process continues.
They said the discussions are aimed at reaching a fair outcome that protects the interests of both transport operators and the travelling public.
