A coalition of opposition political parties, spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is staging a major protest in Accra today, Monday May 5, 2025, to demand the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was recently suspended by President John Dramani Mahama.

The suspension has ignited a wave of political criticism, with opposition leaders denouncing it as a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.
Protesters began assembling early in the morning at a car park opposite the Supreme Court, before embarking on the planned march through major streets in Accra.
Demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans calling for the government to reverse what they described as an ‘unconstitutional and politically motivated’ decision.
The protest forms part of a wider campaign by the coalition to push back against what they see as increasing executive overreach. The coalition is comprised of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP).

Speaking to the media after submitting the first Petition to the Acting Secretary of the Judicial Service, Minority leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin called for a fair system that will benefit all.
A second petition will be submitted to Parliament.
