The Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Professor Harrison Dapaah says nuclearisation of the country’s energy sector is the way to go so far as reliable energy supply is concerned.

He stated that sectors such as Agriculture and health could also benefit immensely from nuclear energy which will speed up the development of the country.

Prof Harrison Dapaah made this known at the signing of an MOU between the UENR and Tomsk Polytechnic University of Russia on Nuclear Development Energy at the school’s premises.

The MOU is aimed at fostering cooperation between UENR and Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), which is a forerunner in nuclear energy in Russian Education, Training, Research and engineering.

The UENR is consequently seeking to get the most out of its nuclearization agenda through its association with TPU.

The partnership is also aimed at developing a critical mass of knowledge in nuclear science and engineering at the UENR.

It was witnessed by Management of UENR and a delegation from TPU.

Addressing the gathering after the signing of the agreement, the Director of Master’s Degree Programme at TPU, Dr. Vera Verhoturova, stated that for Ghana to speed up its development it should consider nuclear technology.

He mentioned reduced cost of electricity, which will be very instrumental in the advancement of Development plans of the country as a notable benefit.

The success of government policies such as Ghana beyond aid, Ghana infrastructural development Initiative and the 1d1F will greatly depend on stable and affordable power generation and also the resilience of power infrastructure which nuclear technology seeks to provide.

Other benefits of nuclear technology as outlined by Dr. Verhoturova include enhanced healthcare and improved agriculture.

She further dismissed the perception that nuclear energy is destructive, saying on the contrary, if adopted, will go a long way to speed up the development process of the country.

For is part the Vice Chancellor of UENR Prof Harrison Dapaah stressed that nuclear technology is Ghana’s best bet at development and encouraged Ghanaians to embrace it.

He stated that the MOU will enable the University build the capacity of its Post and Under Graduate students to the benefit of the country.

He revealed that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah initiated Ghana’s nuclear energy adventure but the process was stopped for some reasons.

He further revealed that government plans on restarting its nuclear Programme which he said is a step in the right direction
