Patrice Motsepe’s visit to Senegal addresses escalating tensions from the CAF Appeals Committee’s March 17 ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, awarding it to Morocco on an administrative 3-0 scoreline.

Visit Details

CAF President Motsepe arrived in Dakar on April 8, 2026, for high-level talks with Senegal’s Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye and FA president Abdoulaye Fall. His itinerary includes official engagements like a visit to Goree Island and a working lunch, culminating in a media conference at 17:30 GMT.

Background Conflict

The controversy stems from a chaotic 2025 AFCON final in Morocco, where Senegal won 1-0 via Pape Gueye’s late goal amid pitch invasions and clashes, but CAF later annulled the result. Senegal launched a legal challenge, fueling disputes over fairness and transparency in CAF processes.

Expected Outcomes

Discussions aim to resolve grievances, rebuild trust, and clarify next steps amid continental scrutiny of African football governance. This diplomatic push could de-escalate the rift between Senegal and CAF.
