Petroleum sector players meet in Accra on emerging issues

Industry players in the Petroleum Upstream sector have converged in Accra as Ghana hosts the 11th International Upstream Forum, the first to be held in Africa.

The forum was to discuss emerging issues confronting the upstream petroleum industry and to deliberate on the best ways to regulate this highly technical, capital- intensive and non-renewable industry.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who officially opened the forum, said, Ghana is committed to ensuring that there is sustainable energy for all.

He underscored the vision of the government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to create an economy of ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’.

Specifically on matters of energy, to develop a modern, diversified, efficient, and financially sustainable “Energy Economy”.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu intimated that Ghana cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of other oil and gas producing countries hence welcomes such fora to share ideas.

He said the country has initiated various policies to ensure that Ghana benefits from the energy sector.

To this end, government has and will continue to implement new strategies while  attracting the needed investment that will make the sector more vibrant.

About 10 countries across the globe are participating in the forum which seeks to, among others, things, discuss current offshore oil and gas issues and best practices towards sustainable oil and gas resource exploration and production.

Egbert Faibille

The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Egbert Faibille, while shedding more light on the essence of the forum said  Ghana has benefitted immensely since joining the forum.

He said the Petroleum Commission will continue to tap into the experience of other countries and draw lessons.

John Peter Amewu

The Minister of Energy, John Peter Amewu while calling on participants to come out with practical solutions to make the sector lucrative, announced that Ghana is reviewing the National Energy Policy in order to ensure that the country fully benefits from the natural resource.
