The Eastern Regional Police Command says it has arrested three persons after intercepting a large consignment of suspected Indian hemp and foiling an alleged GH¢100,000 bribery attempt during an intelligence-led operation.
In a statement issued on Monday, May 11, 2026, the Police said the operation led to the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected narcotics believed to be en route to Nigeria.
According to the statement, personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Department acted on intelligence received on May 10, 2026, regarding suspected narcotics hidden at Akosombo-Bonya.
The statement explained that officers mounted surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School, where they intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 before trailing it to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.
Police said officers caught some suspects transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21.
The suspects reportedly fled into nearby bushes upon seeing the Police, but officers managed to secure both vehicles and the suspected narcotics.
Police identified one of the suspects as Solomon Tettey, a 39-year-old welder and resident of Atua, who later approached officers and allegedly claimed ownership of the vehicles and the consignment.
The statement said Tettey informed officers that the suspected narcotics were being transported to Nigeria.
Police further disclosed that the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with GH¢100,000 to compromise the investigation.
“In an attempt to compromise the investigation, suspect Solomon Tettey offered the officers a bribe of GH¢100,000. Police personnel feigned interest to secure evidence of the bribery. The suspect transferred GH¢90,000 via Mobile Money and provided GH¢10,000 in cash,” the statement noted.
With support from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Odumase Police, officers subsequently arrested Solomon Tettey.
Two other suspects, identified as Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after appearing at the Regional Police Headquarters.
Police said the suspects and all exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and upholding professionalism and integrity in its operations.
