The Ghana Police Service has denied claims that a man in uniform captured on video kicking a young man in the head, is a policeman.

A statement signed by ASP Simon Tenku on behalf of the Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service on Friday said the person seen kicking the victim in the said video is not a Police Officer.

It noted that he is a civilian, a Metropolitan guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly.

In the video, which has gone viral on social media, the uniformed man was seen brutally assaulting a young man. The young man is seen in the video being forced to kneel as he received several rounds of kicks, mostly on his head.

“Preliminary investigation shows that at about 3:00pm on Thursday, March 21 at Agona Swedru in the Central region, the victim was arrested by civilians including Metropolitan guards of the Swedru Municipal Assembly for the alleged offence. The civilians started assaulting the victim/suspect.”

“However, when the attention of a police officer on duty nearby was drawn to the scene, the officer went to the rescue of the victim and filed a report at the Agona Swedru Police Station,” the statement added.
