Political parties and Civil Society Organizations have called for effective regulation of how political parties are funded.

At a roundtable in Accra, organized by the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), the discussants said political parties need resources to recruit high caliber of officers to run their activities as well as prepare and implement their manifestos. They also called on the Electoral Commission to enforce laws that regulate the activities of political parties.

Political parties are required to function as developmental organizations where they understand the socio-economic and governance challenges and have a demonstrable capacity to formulate and implement good policies.

To be developmental, parties need funding to fully operate within peak and off-peak electoral seasons. At a rountable to examine the performance of political parties in Ghana with special reference to their regulation and funding, panelists said there is the need to review the regulatory frameworks of political parties.

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah said the quantum of money spent on political activities must be regulated.
