The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has stated that politics, though a branch of democracy, on the other hand has become unhealthy to the nation of late.
He explained that though political parties are faced with issues of nepotism, the major cause of failure of the economy is the attitude of parties using their chances to reward faithfuls after elections.
He said if political leaders carried their positions as an avenue to give better lives to the people, it would have made them perform better.
The Asantehene made these statements at the leadership lecture and launch of the 55th anniversary of the University of Professional Studies, UPSA, which took place in Accra.
He used the platform to call on the state to ensure a drastic change of attitude of politicalisation in order to make the nation better.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II noted that the introduction of politics has had effect on the grounds of the independence that was fought for the nation.
He called on the nation to rethink its steps because the practice of politics recently is causing failure to the economy.
The Otumfuo was welcomed with appellation and resounding displays of culture as he stepped foot on the grounds of his alma mater.
It was a gathering of students, council members, chiefs, queen mothers, former President John Agyekum Kufuor and other dignitaries.
This year’s leadership lecture also marks the launch of the 55th anniversary of the school.
The council of the Institution organised the lecture this year on the theme: “Leadership in Ghana : Strengthening Democratic Institutions for National Development.”
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abednego Okoe Amartey said UPSA this year has won some prominent awards to show the good fruits the school is bearing.
He revealed that the school is soon to put up another campus to produce more effective leaders for the nation.
UPSA was established in 1965, then as the Institute of Professional Studies. The University now has a student population of over 12 thousand, five hundred.
