A former Attorney General, Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah says the agitation of some people to participate in the upcoming referendum for the creation of new regions is unconstitutional and lacks merit.

Citing his argument especially in the Volta Region where there have been intense pressure by some people in the South, he said their outcry to vote in the referendum to ascertain the wishes of the people in the Oti enclave is misconceived since it is not a provision in the 1992 constitution.

Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah who was the longest serving Foreign Minister and Attorney General of Ghana under Jerry Rawlings led administration, was addressing a press conference at Likpe-Bala in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. It was organized by the Concerned Association of Citizens of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi.

Dr Obed Asamoah said the framers of the constitution did due diligence by clarifying the processes for a referendum for the creation of new regions which according to him was recommended by the Commission of Inquiry.

He noted that administrative regions and districts are created to foster development and bring government closer to the people and that is the drive for the Oti Region to be created.

Dr. Obed Asamoah called on citizens of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi to envisage benefits to be derived from the Oti Region and support the referendum massively.
