Former MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was attacked during violent disturbances at St. Peter’s polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

‎Chaos erupted at Ablekuma North during the parliamentary rerun when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s Polling Station, attacked political figures, and disrupted the voting process while the election was underway.‎

‎Eyewitnesses say the group arrived in a well-coordinated manner, causing fear and confusion among voters. The violence temporarily stopped voting, forcing security personnel to step in and restore order.‎

‎According to Channel One News’ reporter, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and a female party agent were also beaten. Both reportedly suffered facial injuries and were visibly swollen.‎

‎Former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was present at the polling station, was among those attacked during the chaos. Her condition remains unclear at the moment.‎

‎The Electoral Commission organized the rerun across 19 polling stations after disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections left the constituency without a Member of Parliament for months.‎

‎Although the NPP officially boycotted the rerun over claims of unfairness, its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, chose to participate in the election.‎

‎Tensions remain high in the constituency following the violent incident, with many calling for swift investigations and stronger security measures to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
