All is set for the climax of this year’s 65th Independence Day celebrations in Cape Coast in the Central Region. According to GBC’s Central Regional Correspondent, Kofi Sakyiamah Pobi, all hotels in the region are fully booked and some of the dignitaries have started arriving. There is heavy security presence in town and at the venue for the programme.

Some major roads would also be closed to vehicular traffic, according to the event planning team. The 2022 edition of the Independence Day celebration in the Central Region is the third to be hosted outside Accra after the Northern and Ashanti Regions.

Cape Coast and its surrounding communities were hugely resourceful in terms of prominent human resources like barrister and political leader, Joseph Ephraim Casely Hayford, artisan and farmer, Jacob Wilson Sey, and lawyer John Mensah Sarbah, who featured prominently in the country’s political struggle. The celebration of independence 65 years on after the landmark event on March SIX, 1957, is, therefore, a step in the right direction.

Already, the ancient city where relics of colonisation which come in the form of forts, castles, schools, historic buildings, scattered across is receiving facelift and beautiful decorations for the big day at the new Cape Coast Stadium. Commemorated on the theme: “Cape Coast 2022: Working together, bouncing back better”, The two-week independence celebration officially commenced on Friday, February 25 with a clean-up exercise in the city of Cape Coast.

The 65th Independence Day Anniversary has breathed some fresh air into the economy of the Central Region, particularly in Cape Coast, as the various sectors as patronage of goods and services intensifies. For Central Regional Minister Justina Marigold Assan, it is important to develop and build initiatives to attract sustainable investments in the region.

She is unhappy that accolades such as the ‘citadel of education’, ‘tourism heartbeat’ and ‘home of excellence’ bestowed on the region have not impacted on the development of the area. She rallies the people of the region to work hard to change this narrative. With the region hosting the 2022 edition of the independence anniversary, Ghana’s history is certainly re-enacted.
