Ashanti Region: Over 25,000 students register for new voter’s ID – EC

The Electoral Commission says about twenty-five thousand Senior High School students were successfully registered in one hundred and one second cycle schools in the Ashanti Region during the two-day registration exercise carried out specifically for students confined in schools.

The Regional Director of the EC, Benjamin Banor-Bioh who disclosed this to Radio Ghana in Kumasi however noted that not all the qualified students had the opportunity to register, and that plans are being made to register them as well.

Per the official records of the Ashanti regional office of the Electoral Commission, the region now has the full complement of the Biometric Registration kits to cater for all the over one thousand Registrations within a cluster with additional kits as backup to cater for any eventuality.

According to the Regional Director of the EC, Benjamin Banor-Bioh, as at the end of the exercise on Monday the 13th of July, more than nine hundred thousand eligible applicants had been successfully registered in the region and issued with their ID Cards.

Asked for an update on the registration of second cycle students in their schools on the 10th and 11th of this month, the EC’s Regional Director disclosed that about twenty-five thousand of the qualified students were able to register with some others yet to be captured. He expressed satisfaction too with the turn up of eligible citizens at the specially set up registration centres to cater for the aged and vulnerable people.

A visit to four of such special registration centres in Kumasi yesterday showed many aged citizens mostly women seated and patiently waiting for their turns to register as at 5.15 pm. The EC officials were also see distributing face masks at no cost to all the applicants while they kept to the physical distancing protocol.
