The newly elected presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed gratitude to party members following his victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

In a brief Facebook post after the declaration of results, Dr Bawumia thanked supporters for their confidence and support, writing: “To members of our great party, thank you.”

The post was accompanied by the hashtags #WinWithBawumia and #Bawumia2028, signalling an early focus on unity and the party’s preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia’s message comes amid calls for cohesion within the party after a keenly contested primary, which saw him secure a decisive majority of the votes cast nationwide.

He secured 110,643 votes out of 195,901 valid votes cast representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast to give him a clear majority in the nationwide primary.

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong, who polled 36,303 votes. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fourth and fifth respectively.

More than 211,000 delegates cast their ballots at over 300 polling centres across Ghana

His victory positions him as the NPP’s candidate for the 2028 presidential race, with party leaders urging members to rally behind him to strengthen the party’s electoral chances.

The Facebook post has since attracted congratulatory messages from party supporters and members across the country, many of whom echoed calls for unity and collective effort as the NPP begins its campaign journey toward 2028.
