NPP 2028 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the proposed Women’s Development Bank has yet to serve a single market woman, nearly two years after the NDC government promised to establish it.

Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, where the party is electing new national executives, Dr. Bawumia said the NDC’s flagship campaign promise for women has yet to materialise almost two years after winning power.

“The NDC promised a women’s development bank; almost two years on, that bank has not opened its doors to a single market woman,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Bawumia, who was addressing delegates and party faithful gathered at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, said the NDC had raised the hopes of Ghanaian women, particularly market women, traders and women entrepreneurs, with the promise of a dedicated bank to provide affordable credit and financial support.

He noted that despite the fanfare that accompanied the promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign, there is no sign of the bank nearly 21 months into the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, the situation reflects a pattern of unfulfilled promises by the current government, and shows that the NDC has not prioritized the empowerment of women as it claimed.

Dr. Bawumia said Ghanaian women who were expecting low-interest loans, business support and expanded access to capital through the Women’s Development Bank have been left disappointed.

The NPP Flagbearer urged delegates to remain united and focused on the party’s reorganisation agenda, stressing that the failures of the current government present an opportunity for the NPP to present a credible alternative to Ghanaians ahead of the 2028 elections.

“The women of Ghana are waiting, the market women are waiting, but there is no bank. We must be ready to offer them real hope,” he added.

Today’s National Executive Election has brought together over 7,000 delegates from across the country to elect new national officers to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.

Dr. Bawumia, who is seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections, has been actively engaging delegates and has called for discipline, unity and a commitment to end vote-buying in internal party contests.
