Governance Expert, Dr. Frederick Oduro Agyarko, says the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) cannot be affected by the protest since he is not a political officeholder.

According to him, the governor does not seek the support of the public to be in power; rather, he is appointed by government; hence, he is void of political influence.

In an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, he mentioned that though the governor is appointed by government, he is insulated from politics and thus cannot be easily overthrown by the president, not to mention the protestors.

“None of the protestors can remove him from power; even the President cannot have it easy to remove the governor,” he said on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

His comment comes on the back of an organised protest dubbed #OccupyBoG by the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations, and other well-meaning Ghanaians. The objective of the protest was to demand the resignation of the governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies over the losses the central bank recorded in 2022. They argue that a change in leadership is necessary to address perceived shortcomings in the management of Ghana’s economy and the rising cost of living.

But Dr Oduro Agyarko maintained that the pressure of the protestors towards the governor may not drive a change as the government is still suffering. He emphasised that this protest may have very little impact on the governor as compared to the government.
