Chiana should be given separate District – NDC

By Peter Agengre

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has supported calls for the Chiana area in the Upper East Region to be given a separate district to open up the area for development.

The Regional Communications Officer of the party, Mr. Jonathan Salifu Abdallah, speaking to the media, advocated for the splitting up of the Kasena-Nankana West District into two.

He explained that the District has a larger population than some districts in the country, so it’s qualified to be made a separate District.

“When you take a look at the Chiana Traditional Area, the land size alone, the numerous towns and villages and rich resources in the area make it more qualified to be upgraded into a District status. The Chiana area alone is bigger than some constituencies in Ghana or even in the Upper East Region and the time is right for them to be given a separate District,” Mr. Salifu explained.

The NDC Communications Officer was reacting to calls for a separate District by the Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area and President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Pe Detundini Adiali Ayagitam III, at the 6th Fao Festival celebrated by the Chiefs and People of the Chiana Traditional Area.

“Politics is all about development and as a traditional leader of the chiana area; it is his responsibility to make sure that his traditional area is equally well developed. When you create a District, development in that particular area speeds up. People are employed; there is infrastructure development, and NGOs come in to support. So I think it would not be out place for us as a political party to initiate measures for Chiana to get a District,” he indicated.
