COVID-19 positive cases in Parliament forces House to sit twice every week

Parliament of Ghana.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has disclosed that 15 MPs and 56 parliamentary staff have tested positive for the Covid-19.

The Speaker again warned that he may be forced to release the names of the MPs who tested positive but still come to work. Mr. Bagbin asked the MPs and parliamentary staff who tested positive for the Covid-19 to self isolate in accordance with the safety protocols.

Mr. Bagbin announced that from next week, the Parliament will sit only twice a week and only MPs and staff who are needed will be allowed in the house. This excludes those who did not take the test.

MP for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekurful raised concerns about health facilities disclosing the COVID-19 test results of individual MPs with the leadership of Parliament without the prior consent of the Legislators involved.

MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, however, disagrees, saying, confidentiality must be weighed in light of public health, public safety and public interest.
