The former Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace Building (WANEP), who became a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Mahama Administration, Mr. Emmanuel Bombande, says the position of a Deputy Minister in Ghana is as important as that of a substantive Minister.

According to him, a Deputy Minister is an important complement to the roles of a substantive Minister.

The former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Executive Director of WANEP said this while reacting to a comment by the Vice President of Imani Africa, Mr. Kofi Bentil, that the position of a Deputy Minister is not needed and, for that reason, it should be scrapped.

But Mr. Bombande, in a tweet directed to the Vice President of Imani Africa, explained that he (Mr. Bentil) has never been a Deputy Minister before, so he does not know the crucial roles deputy ministers play in governance architecture.

“Deputy Minister Position is an important complement to the roles of a substantive Minister,” He reiterated.

In the view of Mr. Bentil, the work of a deputy minister can be equally done by a Chief Director of the Ministry.

He has therefore called for the total removal of the office of the Deputy Minister.

“I am of the full View that Deputy Ministers are needless !! Chief Directors must do their work! Abolish the post,” he said in a Facebook post.
