More than six thousand registered voters will not be able to vote in the 2020 General election. This is because their names have been captured by the Electoral Commission (EC) as having done double registration.

Ahead of the voter exhibition today the Commission said it will display an exemptions list alongside the list of multiple registrants, all of whom are deemed ineligible to vote come December 7.

Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah gave assurance that the exhibition will not be used as an avenue to remove names from the register indiscriminately.

She made the point at the “Let the Citizen know “ series in Accra.

The EC’s encounter with the media was to inform the public of plans for the successful voter exhibition.

The preparations include the deployment of COVID-19 Ambassadors to all 33,367 centers across the country to ensure adherence to the COVID-19 protocols.

The EC has deployed 5,000 biometric verification devices to selected centers and will be piloted ahead of December 7.

Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah said all names captured on the exceptions list as well as double registration will not have the opportunity to vote in December.

Madam Jean Mensah gave assurances that names will not be taken off the register without justification.

The EC entreats all registered voters to patronise the exhibition in order to correct any anomaly before the polls open in December.

In a related development, the Commission will from today (September 18) activate a Short Message Service (SMS), platform to enable registered voters to check their registration details as captured in the 2020 voters’ register.

This will form part of the exhibition exercise for the register and is available to all registered voters on the short code 1422 as an alternative to visiting exhibition centers.

The EC said the service is currently unavailable.

It said voters who have already attempted accessing the service will have to wait till it is activated for their details to be sent to them. Such voters, however, do not have to re-assess the service upon its activation.

It says the SMS will cost 30 pesewas which is contrary to initial indications that it will be free.
