The Director-General of the Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, has revealed that former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo initially sought to resign through two prominent statesmen before later turning to the courts.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Keypoints show on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Mr Amaliba said credible sources confirmed that the former Chief Justice made the approach through the two respected Ghanaians, asking President John Dramani Mahama to allow her to step down peacefully and secure her entitlements.
“My credible sources tell me that the former CJ approached the President through two eminent Ghanaians, asking to be allowed to step down quietly. The necessary documents were prepared, but she later abandoned that option and went to court,” he said.
He argued that once someone accepts the role of Chief Justice, they are expected to acquaint themselves with the rules of administration and accountability, and cannot excuse lapses by blaming subordinates.
Mr Amaliba further stressed that no public officer, regardless of status, should be exempted from the constitutional process of accountability. He noted that the same constitutional provisions have affected other judges in the past, and it should not be seen as victimisation when applied to the former Chief Justice.
He added that rather than lowering standards for certain officeholders, Ghanaians must focus on the lessons that can be learned from her predicament.
