The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has described the current state of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration as the worst Ghana has ever experienced.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Mr Kodua said illegal mining activities over the past six to seven months under the NDC government have reached alarming levels. According to him, individuals associated with the NDC, including party executives and members, are freely entering forest reserves and water bodies to engage in galamsey without fear of consequences.

He alleged that in some instances, these individuals have even driven away security officers from protected sites to carry out their illegal operations.

“What we are witnessing is unprecedented. The situation is far worse and more dangerous than anything we saw in the last eight years under the NPP government,” Mr Kodua said.

He also criticised the silence of civil society organisations (CSOs), urging them to speak out against the ongoing destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forest lands.

“If they spoke up against galamsey in the past, they should be even louder now because the damage under the NDC is worse,” he added.

Mr Kodua called on the government to urgently address the galamsey crisis, warning that it threatens the country’s environment, water sources, and long-term future.
