Ghana has stepped up her campaign for election for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2022-2023.
This was at a virtual meeting with Permanent Representatives of West African states at the UN in New York.
All the 15 countries in the ECOWAS bloc pledged to support Ghana on Friday, June 11, 2021, to win the seat for the region.
The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter.
The Council is composed of 15 members including five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the UK and the US and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
Ghana’s bid to get onto the UN Security Council non-permanent seat follows the end of the tenure of Niger, which holds the slot for West Africa.
In pursuance of this, Ghana’s minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey is in New York to ramp up the campaign for Ghana for the election which comes off on Friday, June 11, 2021.
In a virtual meeting with Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS member-states at the UN, the foreign minister assured them that if Ghana wins approval, she will push for peace and security in the Sahel region, fight against terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, climate issues and address youth unemployment.
Some permanent representatives of countries in West Africa again pledged their support for Ghana’s candidature to the non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council from 2022-2023.
