Ghana’s Parliament takes on Security apparatus; says Police brutality will not be tolerated

By Augustus Acquaye

Parliament has bared its teeth at the Military over the brutality meted out to citizens of Wa by some of its men.
The Committee on Defence and Interior was in July 2021 tasked to investigate a military brutality in Wa as captured in a viral video.
GBC’s Augustus Acquaye reports that the MPs with one voice chastised the Military and by extension other security services who occasionally violate the rule of law.
When the Committee presented its report, it recommended that while the Military High Command was prompt in stepping in, Officers found culpable must be further sanctioned as was presented by Ophelia Mensah, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Defence and the Interior.

The Ranking Member, James Agalga said ”civilians need to be treated with utmost respect, because the days of military rule are over”.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Zebilla, Cletus Avoka appealed to the security services to work in sync as it emerged that although there were some Police Personnel at the scene, they chose not to step in to avoid a Police – Military confrontation.

MP for Abuakwa South Samuel Atta Akyea said such ”misconduct draws the country’s democracy backwards”.

Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin, directed the Committee to review similar reports by Parliament under the fourth Republic for the necessary actions.
