Ussher Fort and James Fort Reopen to Public After Safety Upgrades

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts has reopened Ussher Fort and James Fort to the general public following safety reviews to balance visitor access with ongoing restoration work.

The historic sites in Accra had been temporarily shut visitors to ensure public safety during restoration efforts. After consultations with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the ministry implemented enhanced measures to allow controlled visits without risks.

New access rules and monitoring systems prevent interference with restoration activities. Key requirements include, a need for visitors, tour guides, and operators to fully comply with designated paths and protocols. Unauthorized entry into restricted restoration zones is prohibited.

These steps preserve the forts’ integrity while keeping them accessible, for tours and educational trips. The ministry reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding Ghana’s cultural heritage for future generations.
