Deputy Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has pledged to champion the passage of the Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill if confirmed in his new role.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee during the vetting of deputy ministerial nominees, Mr. Quayson underscored the urgency of the bill, stressing its potential to unlock immense benefits for Ghana through the active involvement of skilled Ghanaians in the diaspora.
According to him, there is the need for inclusive governance and equal opportunities. He believes that Ghanaians in the diaspora should be allowed to participate fully in the country’s democratic processes, leveraging their skills and expertise to drive progress.
Mr Quayson also suggests that taxation policies should be reviewed to ensure fairness if dual citizens are granted the right to hold public office.
‘’I am a strong advocate for dual citizenship and as we all know there is no place like home’’, he said.
The Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to amend Ghana’s constitution to permit dual citizens to hold specific public offices. Currently, the law restricts dual citizens from serving as MPs, Inspector General of Police, ambassadors, or high commissioners. Quayson argues that this restriction marginalizes Ghanaians abroad who are committed to the country’s growth and development.
