The Japanese government has expressed interest in establishing a Japanese External Trade Organisation (JETRO) office in Ghana to facilitate trade among citizens of the two countries subject to the approval of the Parliament of Ghana.

This was reviewed, when a four-man delegation from the Japanese Parliament paid a courtesy call on the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu. The delegation made a call on the Parliament of Ghana to expedite actions on the request when the Legislature resumes sitting later this month, January.

The Leader of the delegation, Manabu Sakai, told the Deputy Speaker and his entourage made up of the Majority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu and the Chairman of the Ghana-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association, Seth Acheampong among others that some Japanese businesses which are eager to invest in Ghana are awaiting the approval of the agreement.

The JETRO is a government-related organisation that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world.

The First Deputy Speaker, who is also the MP for Bekwai, observed that the popularity and proliferation of Japanese vehicles in Ghana over the past few years was due to the simpleness the technology which made it easy for the mechanics to adopt and repair with ease.

He however expressed the need for the vehicle companies to consider upgrading the skills of the local mechanics in order to keep them abreast with the introduction of new technologies into the latest vehicles in order to sustain the interest of Ghanaians in Japanese vehicles.

Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO’s core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small to medium size Japanese firms maximise their global export potential.
