Kennedy Agyapong referred to NPP disciplinary committee over ‘anti-party comments’

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred former presidential aspirant and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to its National Disciplinary Committee.

The decision follows a series of petitions from some party loyalists accusing the outspoken politician of making public utterances that, in their view, threaten party cohesion and internal discipline.

The directive was announced by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) after a closed-door joint meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The Disciplinary Committee, chaired by former Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has been given two weeks to investigate and report.

While party executives declined to pre-judge the case, inside sources and political correspondents note that the uproar stems from a pattern of recent public statements made by Mr. Agyapong following the party’s 2024 general election defeat.

Mr. Agyapong has publicly criticized party leadership, notably stating in a recent interview, “I don’t trust anybody in the NPP because of what I experienced during the primaries,” while continuously slamming the party for allegedly neglecting its grassroots.

The firebrand politician drew sharp criticism for his recent attacks on the party leadership over an alleged failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital.

Petitions filed by concerned party members and MPs assert that his public outbursts intentionally deepen internal rifts ahead of the upcoming 2028 executive and flagbearer races.

The rift played out outside the NEC meeting venue, where a faction of aggrieved party supporters staged an aggressive protest.

Carrying placards reading “Ken Must Go,” the demonstrators chanted slogans demanding his immediate dismissal, arguing that his conduct is highly detrimental to the party’s restructuring efforts.

Conversely, Mr. Agyapong’s campaign team has struck back, demanding that the NPP leadership should instead summon regional heavyweights like Chairman Wontumi and Kwame Abronye before the disciplinary body for their own alleged misconduct.

The National Council will determine any appropriate sanctions or suspension once the committee submits its findings.
