Lawyer and member of the New Patriotic Party’s Communications Team, Kwesi Botchway Jnr., has questioned the arrest and denial of bail to NPP communicator Kwame Baffoe, citing what he described as unequal treatment in similar political cases.

Speaking on Prime Insight, Mr Botchway Jnr. referred to comments previously made by National Democratic Congress Deputy National Communications Officer Malik Basintale about Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Malik Basintale once insulted Dr Bawumia, saying he eats pork and drinks beer. Was he arrested for it?” he asked.

Abronye, whose real name is Kwame Baffoe, was recently arrested and denied bail over comments alleged to constitute offensive conduct.

The arrest has drawn criticism from sections of the NPP, with party officials arguing that it reflects a selective application of the law.

Mr Botchway Jnr. said the development raises concerns about fairness in the handling of political speech and public commentary.

His remarks add to the NPP’s broader claims that Ghana’s democratic credentials are under threat because of the manner in which political speech is being policed.

The issue has since become part of a wider national debate on free speech, political accountability and the role of the judiciary in handling politically sensitive matters.
