Former Member of Parliament for Mpohor, Alex K. Agyekum, has called for tolerance and constructive engagement in Parliament following the recent change in Majority Leadership.
He cautioned the House against growing political tensions and divisions, warning that Parliament must not become an arena for chaos, confusion and needless confrontation.
Speaking on the changing political dynamics in Parliament, Agyekum said the emerging rivalry between the Majority and Minority leaderships, particularly on social media, could undermine the dignity and sanctity of the legislative institution.
He urged the incoming Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, James Agalga, to remain focused on the constitutional mandate of Parliament and avoid distractions arising from political propaganda and partisan exchanges.
Agyekum stressed that Parliament must remain a place where laws are made and the Executive is effectively scrutinised.
He also called on the Speaker and the leadership of the House to maintain neutrality and ensure that parliamentary proceedings are conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the Standing Orders.
According to him, the need for tolerance and consensus-building has become even more important as Parliament prepares to consider proposed amendments to the non-entrenched provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
He noted that Government has already issued its position on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee, making it necessary for Parliament to approach the exercise with maturity and a willingness to reach consensus.
Agyekum questioned whether Parliament could effectively deliberate on such fundamental constitutional issues if the Majority and Minority remain deeply polarised and constantly engaged in confrontation.
He therefore challenged James Agalga, in his capacity as Leader of Government Business, to work towards building consensus across the political divide and ensure that constitutional amendments are considered on the basis of sound arguments and the national interest.
He said Parliament must avoid acrimonious exchanges, entrenched partisan positions and unnecessary boycotts that could undermine its ability to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
Agyekum further cautioned against narratives on social media suggesting an impending showdown between the two caucuses, describing such developments as potentially counterproductive.
He urged both the Majority and Minority leaderships to prioritise the stability, dignity and effectiveness of Parliament, stressing that the institution’s constitutional responsibilities must remain above partisan interests.
