Mine workers laud intervention to shut down Manganese Company

The Ghana Mine Workers Union has lauded the government’s intervention to shut down the Ghana Manganese Company Limited which has more than 300 million dollars revenue loss to the state.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the General Secretary of the Union, Prince William Ankrah, said the move will help government to recover money lost due to mismanagement of the company.

Mr. Ankrah allayed fears of possible layoffs resulting from the shutdown.

Meanwhile, news of the shutdown of the Ghana Manganese Company Limited, GMCL, at Akwatia has sent shivers down the spine of many, especially the workers.

This has raised concerns over the possible implications of the shutdown. Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, Labour Expert, Austin Gamey, believes the indefinite shutdown of the GMCL is not the best approach to dealing with its revenue loss to the state.

Mr. Gamey suggested that for business continuity, there should be engagement between Management of the Company and government to devise a payment plan to offset the debt.

Mr. Gamey advised the Workers Union to be cautious in its interactions on the issue.
