Minority Caucus will boycott EC in next Parliament- Haruna Iddrisu

The Minority in Parliament Tuesday, December 22, was involved in a standoff with the police at the Head Office of the EC as the NDC MPs were denied entry to the premises of the Commission to present their petition to the Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, warned that the minority caucus will boycott the electoral commission in the next Parliament.

This is because the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa disrespected the Minority caucus by not showing up to receive their petition despite acknowledging receipt of notification to present a petition.

The minority caucus in Parliament, mostly dressed in red and black attire, was met by armed security personnel at the entrance of the Electoral Commission Head Office, after they forcefully made their way through three police barricades from Parliament, through the ridge roundabout to their destination.

The main entrance to the Commission was immediately blocked by the police, upon arrival of the minority causes.

The NDC MPs were involved in a standoff with the police for close to an hour as the minority leader demanded entry into the premises to present their petition.

After several minutes of failed attempts to do so, the minority leader said the NDC MPs will not be involved in approving budget for the Commission in the next parliament.

He outlined their demands contained in the petition.

The Greater Accra Regional Commander, Kwasi Ofori, said the minority did not seek permission from the Police that’s why they were not allowed to present their petition.

The Minority caucus then walked back to Parliament to continue the business of the day.
