Parliament on Tuesday February 18 centered its debate on illegal mining and its effects on the environment. The focus was whether the government has really done enough to fight the menace.

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhiyini asked the President to account for the missing excavators and equipment retrieved from illegal miners.

He said those implicated in the missing excavators must be punished.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama called for a holistic approach to the issue, devoid of partisan politics. She however put the figure of the missing excavators at 34.

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu suggested the Environment Minister should appear before parliament to answer questions on the missing excavators.

Meanwhile, Parliament could not conclude the debate on a report on a tax waiver of $23.9 million on materials and equipment to be procured to construct the Pullman Accra Airport City Hotel and Services Apartments.

The debate ended after the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, John Jinapor described the project as President Akufo-Addo hotel and stepped out before he could be asked to retract and apologise.
