As Ghana celebrates its 67th independence from colonial masters, many are calling for a restoration of the country’s economy.

Many believe that the proceeds from natural minerals have not been put to good use for the benefit of the larger population.

At the Independence Day celebration held at Nangodi in the Nabdam District in the Upper East Region, the Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, told GBCNews that the democracy Ghanaians fought for has been mismanaged and thrown to the dogs by the New Patriotic Party led by President Akufo-Addo.

“Democracy is expected to propel us to achieve socioeconomic development, and that is what we are lacking as a country. If you look at the economic situation in the country now under President Akufo-Addo, I’m sorry to say that it’s an apology of the number of years we have been practicing democracy. If we don’t take time, all the gains that we have made during the period of democracy will be lost.”

The lawmaker is expecting an improvement in the educational sector in his constituency to grow more talent. He also used the occasion to call on President Akufo-Addo to revamp the economy to reflect the independence gained.

He recounted:

“The educational system by itself things are not going on well. The study material, infrastructure, contact hours, among others are a disturbing phenomenon in the country. We are not making gains in so many areas including health, business and sports. These must be given attention to reflect the hard work done by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

The 67th Independence Day Celebration was held within two hours at the Nangodi Primary School Park. This was to prevent the children from being exposed to the hot sun. Thirty-two contingents in the district waited in front of their respective school banners in a colourful gathering before the march-past got underway.

The Kongo Senior High School cadet exhibited some skills as if to prove to the DCE and dignitaries present that they were worthy of defending their country when given the military uniform.
