The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and leader of government business in Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that the National Identification Authority (NIA) system of registering both Ghanaians and foreigners is more rigid and robust than that of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Addressing the media, in Parliament today, March 1, 2023, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that the NIA’s system due to its rigid and robust nature, many states and none state institutions have adopted the Ghana Card as the sole form of identity.

“This is a system that has come to sanitise and purify our system. There are various institutions which recognise the integrity of the National Identification Authority and indeed the Ghana Cards and have resorted to the use of the Ghana Cards,” the leader of government business in Ghana’s Parliament maintained.

EC and use of Ghana Card

Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu went further to explain that the proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) being championed by Ghana’s electoral management body will not disenfranchise Ghanaians in the 2024 general elections, as it is being alleged by the Minority caucus in the House.

He maintained that the proposed new policy rather aims at sanitising the electoral process.

The EC with its new C. I is seeking to use the Ghana Card as the source document for registration onto the voters register.
