The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a statement condemning what it describes as threats of death and physical assault by two officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

In the statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP Frank Annoh-Dompreh were threatened by NDC National Vice Chairman, Sofo Azorka, and the NDC Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Abdul Wahab Amadu.

The statement further alleged that the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, was physically attacked at the polling station by Mr. Azorka and a group of supporters.

According to the NPP, such conduct, particularly by national and constituency officers of a political party, undermines democratic gains and risks escalating insecurity, especially in light of Ghana’s recent decline on the Global Peace Index.

The party announced that it will lodge a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service and urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest and investigate the two NDC officials, along with others captured in videos circulating in the media.

The NPP emphasized that the alleged actions should be thoroughly investigated and, where necessary, punished under the law.
