NPP elects Lydia Alhassan to replace Agyarko in Ayawaso-West Wuogon by-election

A widow of the Late member of parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has been elected as a Parliamentary candidate for the New Patroitic Party, (NPP) in primaries held on Saturday, December 29, 2018.

Lydia Alhassan, affectionately called Mama Lydia, who is a hard core NPP member secured 441 votes to beat four other contenders.

Aboagye polled 76 votes, Ato William 131 votes, Victoria Esinam Odei one vote and Samuel Owusu Amankwa 19 votes.

The District Electoral Officer, Rashid Nantongma, who declared the results said out of the 718 total votes expected they recorded 670 voters turnout and two rejected votes.

The election was to elect a candidate to represent the party in the January 31, by-election.

A total of 718 electorates from six electoral areas voted to choose one person from the five candidates contesting for the slot.

Lydia Alhassan re-placed her late husband, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, the MP for the constituency  who died on Wednesday, November 21.

Responding to the victory, Mama Lydia dedicated the win to her late husband, saying: ”We did it together, this victory is not only for Lydia but for the five of us …I will like to dedicate it to our late MP E.K. Agyarko … we are in this together, let us go out there and face Delali Brempong (NDC candidate) and retain the seat.”
