The five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will on Thursday, January 22, 2026, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), pledging to uphold the collective interest of the party and support the eventual winner of the presidential primary.
They are a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Ken Ohene Agyapong; a former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, Dr Byran Acheampong; a former Vice-President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; a former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The signing of the MoU, also dubbed the ‘Peace Pact’, is part of the Presidential Elections Committee’s (PEC) efforts to ensure a peaceful and harmonious primary process, flagbearer election slated for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The MoU, undertaken in good faith and in the spirit of patriotism, loyalty, unity and party cohesion, commits the candidates to remain faithful, loyal and supportive of the eventual winner of the party’s presidential slot for the 2028 general election.
The PEC, chaired by a former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, in a statement, urged all stakeholders to support this initiative and work towards a peaceful and successful primary process.
“The committee is confident that this initiative will contribute to a peaceful and successful primary process, and looks forward to announcing the eventual winner,” it said.
The event to be held in Accra would be attended by former presidents, John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; the acting National Chairman of the party, Danquah Smith Buttey; the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, and the party’s National Council of Elders Chairman, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang.
The rest are Akosua Frema Osei Opare, National Council of Patrons; Prof. Mike Oquaye, Former Chair, PEC; Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader, and Patricia Appiagyei, his deputy.
It is the last activity to take place before the party’s flagbearer election.
The election would be conducted in 277 voting centres across the country, covering all 276 constituencies and the party’s national headquarters. A total of 214,812 delegates would be expected to vote, with no provision for proxy voting.
The PEC in an earlier statement reiterated that the Ghana Police Service had been granted exclusive jurisdiction over security arrangements for the primary, and no private or unauthorised security arrangements would be permitted at any voting centre on the election day.
