The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its highly anticipated Regional Executive Elections across 15 regions on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with the Western North Region concluding the national exercise on Sunday, August 16.
The synchronised polls represent a critical phase in the party’s ongoing internal reorganisation following its exit from power in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP leadership says it has finalised all logistics and deployed electoral officers to designated voting centres across the country, assuring members of a transparent, free and fair process.
Thousands of certified party delegates will cast their ballots to elect new regional executives, with 11 positions up for election in each region. These include Regional Chairman, Secretary, Organiser, Women’s Organiser and Youth Organiser.
Political analysts point to major battlegrounds that could shape the party’s future strategic direction. In the Ashanti Region, a fierce leadership battle is playing out as local factions compete for the influential Regional Chairmanship position, a race considered vital to maintaining the NPP’s stronghold in the region.
Bono Region: At the GNAT Hostel in Sunyani, 281 delegates will decide whether incumbent Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, can fend off four challengers to retain his position.
Greater Accra and Western Regions: Highly competitive races for the Regional Chairman and Secretary positions have attracted considerable grassroots attention, with hundreds of aspirants cleared to contest.
To prevent procedural disputes, the NPP National Secretariat has instituted strict guidelines across all voting centres.
The Ghana Police Service will have exclusive responsibility for security operations. The party has also banned proxy voting and prohibited delegates from taking mobile phones or recording devices into voting booths to ensure ballot secrecy.
The regional elections are a prerequisite for the party’s next major internal process: the election of its new national leadership.
Following the declaration of results this weekend, the newly constituted National Elections Committee, chaired by Frederick Opare-Ansah, will officially open nominations for the National Executive Elections on August 17, 2026.
The final phase of the internal restructuring will culminate in a National Delegates Conference scheduled for October 3, 2026.
Party executives have urged all aspirants and delegates to show mutual respect and prioritise party unity over individual ambitions, stressing that grassroots mobilisation will be essential to rebuilding the NPP’s structures ahead of future political campaigns.
